2 Days in Varkala: A Relaxing Itinerary with Beaches and Local Culture

Varkala is a beautiful coastal town located in the Indian state of Kerala. It is famous for its stunning beaches, picturesque cliffs, and spiritual significance. A 2-day itinerary in Varkala can be a perfect escape for those looking for a peaceful and relaxing vacation. This itinerary includes visiting popular attractions, exploring the town's culture and heritage, indulging in local cuisine, and experiencing the serene beauty of the beaches.


Day 1:

  • 9:00 AM: Start your day with a visit to the iconic Varkala Cliff, which offers stunning views of the Arabian Sea. You can take a stroll along the cliff, watch the sunrise, and enjoy breakfast at one of the many cafes that line the cliff.

  • 11:00 AM: Visit the ancient Janardana Swamy Temple, located near the cliff. This Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to be over 2,000 years old.

  • 1:00 PM: Have lunch at one of the beachside restaurants near the cliff.

Day 2:

  • 9:00 AM: Start your day with a visit to the Kappil Lake, which is located about 6 km from Varkala. You can take a boat ride on the lake, enjoy the scenic views, and explore the nearby mangrove forests.

  • 11:00 AM: Visit the Anjengo Fort, a historic fort built by the British in the 17th century. The fort has a rich history and offers stunning views of the sea.

  • 1:00 PM: Have lunch at one of the local restaurants near the fort.

  • 2:00 PM: Visit the Varkala Tunnel, an old tunnel that was used to transport goods from Varkala Beach to the backwaters. The tunnel is about 924 feet long and is an engineering marvel.
